Forming an Opportunity Belief

1.     My Beginning Point: I believe that an opportunity exists where the University of Florida should add more blue emergency lights on campus, especially in the area of Fraternity row.
2.     Describe your belief: The blue emergency light is a lit-up stand that has a phone/ button that contacts you directly to the UF police department. These lights are very important to the UF community especially students, this button can save students from many harmful or dangerous situations and I think it is important to get more of these lights and in areas where it may be very important.
3.     Identify the prototypical customer: Students on the University of Florida Campus.
4.     Interviews:
·      Rachael Burrei: Rachael is a junior at the University of Florida and believes more lights should be added. As she walks home late at night she has noticed there are many lights located all over and then realized there are none on Fraternity Row. She explained how this is a secluded area on campus and believes this is an important area to have extra safety.
·      Jessica Friedman: Jessica is a student at the University of Florida, she has a boyfriend who lives on Fraternity row, on late nights when she is there she sees students coming back alone, walking alone and sometimes very intoxicated. After talking with Jessica, she thinks the safety lights are very important and definitely need to be added on Fraternity row.
·      Jenifer Spar: Jen is also a student at the University of Florida, and finds herself walking home late at night by herself. She explained how she knows this is an unsafe idea but when she has to be in the library studying, she doesn’t have a choice but to walk or Uber alone. She feels much safer knowing that these lights are around in case of an emergency. After explaining to her that there are none on Fraternity row she was disappointed because she knows how important this light is, and many students do live in that area and should have the same safety that the rest of the campus has.
5.     Reflection: After speaking with other students, I realized many students agree with this opportunity and feel the need that blue emergency lights should be added to fraternity row.  Fraternity row is a popular part of campus and should not be put in a dangerous situation due to the lack of emergency lights. Because the campus has many lights all over, it should be an important thing to add more lights in this area for the safety of students.
6.     Summary: After thinking about this idea and speaking with others about it I feel the need for my opportunity belief even stronger. After getting other customers to agree with me I believe that this is a bigger deal to the student population, not just myself and that it is an accurate opportunity.

  1. This is very interesting. I had no idea that Fraternity row was lacking so much. I can definitely say that the lights are very important to have. Once, I was followed by somebody. As I was walking on the sidewalk, there was a guy following me from a distance, walking through bushes trying to keep from being noticed. He was probably trying to rob me. I kept a close eye on him, but he turned around as soon as he saw a police car. There wasn't a single emergency light along the stretch that I walked. Probably would have pressed one if there was. At least the cop was there.
